Warning: Very, very slight spoilers ahead.

A New England Folktale is the unofficial subtitle of The Witch. Director Robert Eggers spoke at a Q&A session after a screening I attended and called it more a “fairy tale” than folk tale. The idea, I believe, being that it’s based more on a fantasy character than something more traditional passed down to teach a lesson, like so many folk tales. Yet, even for it’s fantasy-based origins, the witch in this tale may just be real.

Cheating on Game of Thrones (with Game of Thrones)

SPOILERS ABOUND!

The new season of Game of Thrones begins tonight but that doesn’t mean people haven’t watched nearly half the season already. The leak is an interesting happenstance for this show, specifically. Rife with spoiler-heavy plot lines, and with dozens of character’s lives on the line each week, it’s usually in the best interest of fans everywhere to keep most talk of past episodes to a lull around those who haven’t caught up yet. In this case, the onus is on the casual torrent seeker in possession of these new episodes to keep their traps shut for the next month or so. Reviewers aside, most people would not have had the chance to see a television episode prior to air until now. Call it the new age of technology or possibly just an intern from the show that had nothing to lose, but instant gratification without commercials on multiple platforms is no longer good enough for the internet republic. We must now see things before anyone else is supposed to and then complain about it when we can’t. The spoilers will now require pre-spoiler clarifications to see how far ahead we cheated in order to know what the hell we can even discuss. [Read more…]

The People We Know

It’s hard to believe how many people you get to know throughout your whole life. I mean like really get to know. They float through our vision like a love we may never feel or a flavor that remains unknown. We know they are present; always present. But once they cease to exist, we seem to long for them more than before. There’s an absence that’s hard to explain and yet it’s so obvious. We should have known all along. The lives and people we strive for seem apparent to the lucky ones. The rest of us are left wishing we had hoped just a little bit more once they’re gone.

The Horror of Metaphor in It Follows

Horror movies tend to deal with society through easy to follow metaphors. Jason’s mommy issues, Michael Myers’ rage due to abuse and neglect, Freddy Krueger being a child of rape. The point being that sometimes the driving force, the literal ‘horror’, behind these films isn’t the mostly male killers lashing out but a trauma held only within the mind of our protagonist.

Some of you may have heard of John Lewis, a U.S. Representative for Georgia’s 5th congressional district who—with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and four others—was one of six leaders within civil rights organizations during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s. But a lot of younger people may not know his name. Along with Andrew Aydin, Lewis’s Congressional aide, the duo released a graphic novel in 2013 about his fight for racial equality, now stretching over 50 years. While I may not be the first to review this, I thought it relevant to touch upon the importance of John Lewis and his role in a movement that changed the country. [Read more…]
