Unscripted Moments: The Bird Girl at Mercy Street Theater

For this Segment of Unscripted Moments, we’re sitting down with Julia Rohed the director of The Bird Girl a brand new play. The show was written by resident playwright EJC Calvert, and is being put up by Mercy Street a new company in their first season here in Chicago.

A little about the show:

Living a life of solitude in a remote asylum, Amity’s world is shaken when she’s scooped up by an enterprising ringmaster and finds herself the centerpiece of a traveling freak show. …..The Bird Girl is a look at the intense pressure of public gaze, how it effects self-image and becomes a driving force in Amity’s life. The play was developed in workshop with Jon Robin Baitz at the New School for Drama in 2009, and had a reading with NYAC’s Casual Reading Series in August 2010.

Horror movies tend to deal with society through easy to follow metaphors. Jason’s mommy issues, Michael Myers’ rage due to abuse and neglect, Freddy Krueger being a child of rape. The point being that sometimes the driving force, the literal ‘horror’, behind these films isn’t the mostly male killers lashing out but a trauma held only within the mind of our protagonist.

Games on Addison: Working the Board

When I’m looking for some serious tabletop enjoyment, I want to work.

Well, I don’t want to work — I want to strategically place little wooden meeples on a board, and gain the benefits from that strategic placement. In short, when I want some deeply-satisfying board game action, I often look to worker placement games.

“We’re here to kick ass and… allow you to roll a die and claim an amount of food relative to the result of said roll. Yeah.”

Both of us Beans have been fans of the series since it premiered way back in 2007, so we’re going to re-watch one season per week before the final season begins. An Ode to the Parks and Recreation Finale

In the week after Parks and Recreation aired its series finale, the emotional high faded and my focus shifted to a television landscape still littered with great comedy, including daring and original work like Broad City and Man Seeking Woman. But so far time has not afforded me any critical distance: I love this show, and feel the need to express what an unambiguously positive time I have had with it. This is a show I want to celebrate, not critique. Its impact on television comedy has been overwhelmingly positive, filling our screens with more likeable, human, and even unapologetically decent folks who still manage to be hilarious. Originally presented as The Office transposed into small town government and as a natural extension of the trend of cringe humor, Parks found its feet in its second season and transformed itself into something clear-eyed and earnest while never sacrificing its alt-comedy edge, pulling comedy back from a ledge of cynicism and irony that had become boringly routine.
